India offers sensational teas that have been sought by the world. The cultivation and brewing of tea in India has a long history of applications in the traditional systems of medicine and consumption. The consumption of tea in India was first clearly documented in the Ramayana (750-500 BC). Tea is indigenous to eastern and northern India, and was cultivated and consumed there for thousands of years. Legend has it that the tea plant was growing wild in India and brewed by local inhabitants from various regions. The first recorded reference to tea in India is from the ancient epic of the Ramayana when Hunuman was sent to the Himalaya Mountains to bring Sanjeevani a tea plant for medicinal purposes. The Singpo tribe along with the Khamti tribe also validate that they have been consuming tea since the 12th century. Popular Indian Teas include Assam, Darjeeling, Ayurveda and Nilgiri. Most popular black teas actually contain some Assam even though they are sold under different labeling.
